What is Pediatric Gastroenterology?

Pediatric gastroenterologist are specialists who treat children from the newborn period through the young adult years and are trained to perform diagnostic tests for a child’s digestive system. Since children express their concerns differently than adults and sometimes cannot answer medical questions, pediatric gastroenterologist know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them feel relaxed, comfortable and cooperative. These specialized physicians focus on problems unique to pediatric patients, including GI-related growth problems, physical and emotional development, age-related social or family issues and medical/genetic history. Most pediatric gastroenterologist offices are arranged and decorated with children in mind to create an environment of trust and relaxation.

If your child is experiencing any GI or nutritional problems your pediatrician will most likely refer you to a pediatric gastroenterologist where he or she can receive child-focused GI care.
